Flag

The first use of the flag of San Marino was in 1797.

The flag was adopted on 6 April 1862.

The current flag was adopted on 22 July 2011.

The flag consists of two equal horizontal stripes of white on top and light blue

on the bottom.

In the center is the country’s coat of arms featuring a shield that portrays

three towers and a gold crown on top with an oak and laurel leaves on either

side. Under the shield is a scroll which reads “LIBERTAS”.

The white color represents peace, the blue represents liberty.

The inscription on the flag also references liberty. The three towers depicted on the shield represent the peaks of the mountain known as Monte Titano (or Mount Titan). The first tower, Guaita, is the oldest and most well-known of the trio. The second, Cesta, was built in the 13th century while the third, Montale, is the only one not accessible to the public.

Religion

San Marino is a predominantly Catholic state, over 97% of the population profess the Roman Catholic faith, just like Italy, San Marino is a nation that is predominantly Catholic.

In addition, despite its dominance, the state constitution does not acknowledge Catholicism as the national religion. Interestingly, the dominant portion of the population, the Sammarinese, have always been against the control of the Vatican. However, they still practice Catholicism and accept the authority of the pope on matters to do with religion.

Aside from Catholicism, Jews have been present in San Marino for more than 600 years. Documents mentioning a Jewish presence date as far as the 14th century. The government, despite offering them protection, required that they follow some rules and put on special badges. Today, however, the number has diminished greatly. In addition to Judaism, there is a minority population of Protestants who are mostly part of the Waldensian Church of Piedmont.

Language

There are two official languages spoken in San Marino: standard Italian and a Sammarinese dialect.

The primary and the national language of San Marino is Italian

Of all the Romance languages, Italian, together with Sardinian, are the closest to Latin. The Italian language is an official language in San Marino and other countries such as Italy, Vatican City, Switzerland, Croatia, and Slovenia. In San Marino, the Italian language is used as a second language.

The Sammarinese dialect is the second official language of San Marino. Spoken by 83% of the country, Sammarinese is a variant of the Emiliano-Romagnolo language, which is also known as Romagnol or Romagnoli.

However, the language spoken on a daily basis is standard Italian, but typical Sammarinese expressions and phrases are commonly used as well.

English is spoken as a third language by some of the Sammarinese population.
